Juggling Light Winds and Other Commitments

Updated: 5 days ago

The sea was like glass for most of the day. Less than 3 knots of wind means motors are on and we’re using the generator as needed to supplement electricity. Still, it is beautiful.

We took advantage of the calm weather to go swimming and take outdoor showers on the back of the boat. Feels so good to wash my hair! For some exercise, swam a couple laps between the hulls of the catamaran and then floated down the outside.

We’re about halfway now from Tenerife to Cabo Verde and based on other commitments for the crew in mid December, we’re faced with a decision: since we’ve had such bad wind on this leg of the journey, do we still stop in Cabo Verde for a night? Or do we cut the corner and head SW toward Sint Maarten? Could save us a couple hundred nautical miles and a couple days time. Talks to be had, weather to be appraised, supplies to be evaluated.

In the meantime, we found some juggling balls on board and Cpt. Jan is giving juggling lessons. He recommends starting off easy by only juggling in bursts and building dominance in both hands.

Finished my audiobook on night watch last night - the full moon was a good one. Felt like daylight on deck.

Among other boat work, we played Crunchwrap today (3-person trick taking game, previously called Curbstomp in other circles - you can see why the name was changed). No wind means card games are certainly easier.

Appreciating that Connor sent me with some great tea.

P.S. here’s a picture of last night’s sunset just 'cause it’s pretty:)

I am rubbish at even the most common software so i hope this gets to you. I just talked to your mom and she saw your reply to my earlier question about watch standing but i can’t find it.

I know modern boats can sail themselves but probably wouldn’t see the supertanker bearing down on them, so a watch stander is very important.

I am jealous you can juggle; you’d think as a helicopter pilot i would have reasonable hand-eye coordination and i do…but i’ve never been able to keep more than one ball in the air.

I’m glad you’re going to make a fresh food stop and see a new harbor. On our month-long trips down the Colorado, we…

Thanks for your kind notes, Lee. We’ve definitely been keeping cabbage on board! It is incredible how it can keep. We use it in salads and stir fries, who knows what next. One head has lasted us many meals.

I’ll probably make a post about standing watch here soon.

Loved hearing your voice yesterday, honey.- and the rush of the water against the boat. Blows my mind!

I sure hope you get to stop in Cape Verde. Would be your first time in Africa, right?!

Love you

In all honesty, I’ve attempted learning before so I’m not starting from scratch. But I’ve never been any good so this is a more dedicated effort:)

Glad I can keep you updated on our progress and wellbeing. Thanks for lending Jan to us!

I love waking up to your blog, Emma. I'm curious - what is the night watch about? Are you looking for other boats? Is it hard to stay awake? What will you do when you've finished your audiobooks - can you download new ones? We sure do love you and looking forward to each day of your travels. Love, Grandmother and Howl

Hey Grandmother, good questions! Maybe I’ll do a post about night watches soon. But essentially yes, looking for other boats, monitoring weather, and ensuring that the sails stay trimmed correctly and the boat stays on track.

Luckily I have lots of audiobooks downloaded plus books on the kindle, podcasts, and lots of music. I will probably switch around among those options once I finish the books I’m most invested in:)

Love you both a whole ton!
